Nail Salon Ventilation Requirements in Texas

Ensuring proper ventilation in nail salons is crucial for maintaining a healthy environment for both technicians and clients. In Texas, specific regulations outline how nail salons must manage air quality and ventilation systems to mitigate the risks associated with indoor air pollutants and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) commonly found in salon products.

Understanding the Texas Building Code

The Texas Building Code, which integrates aspects of the International Mechanical Code (IMC), provides guidance on ventilation requirements for commercial properties such as nail salons. It specifies mechanical and local exhaust systems necessary to ensure air quality, safety, and compliance.

Mechanical Ventilation & Exhaust Specifications Summary

  • Source Capture System: Each nail station in Texas must be equipped with a source capture system capable of exhausting not less than 50 cubic feet per minute (cfm) per station. The exhaust inlets must be installed according to Section 502.20 to capture contaminants effectively at their source.

  • Minimum Airflow: Compliance requires mechanical ventilation systems that can exhaust a minimum of 50 cfm per manicure and pedicure station, aligning with both state and IMC guidelines.

  • Outside Exhaust: The mechanical exhaust must be directed to the outdoor atmosphere, preventing recirculation of contaminated air within the salon space. This setup ensures that exhaust discharges are placed appropriately to avoid nuisances and uphold health standards.

  • Exhaust Air & Makeup Air: Salon systems must maintain a balance where the rate of outdoor air supply matches the exhaust rate, ensuring the proper function of ventilation under occupational conditions.

b. Mechanical exhaust is required, and air recirculation within these spaces is prohibited.

h. Every manicure and pedicure station must feature a source capture system exhausting at least 50 cfm per station. Installation of exhaust inlets should comply with Section 502.20.

Section 502.20 - Manicure and Pedicure Stations

Manicure and pedicure stations are mandated to feature an exhaust system in alignment with Table 403.3.1.1h standards. If exhaust inlets are not pre-installed, they must be positioned within 12 inches from the chemical application point to ensure effective contaminant capture.

HealthyAir® System Installation Considerations

Nail salon owners should ensure their ventilation system installations comply with both state and local regulations.

A separate electrical permit might be necessary for installing various source capture system configurations.

Professional assistance, such as from a local HVAC technician, plumber, or general contractor, may be required for integrating the exhaust system into existing structures.
